About this resource

Neville wants to wear his lucky cap during a spelling test, and Deja isn’t sure that’s fair. These community and fairness role play scenarios give Grades 2–5 twenty scripted scenes where the Fairness Champion works out the fair way: the same rules for everyone, fair turns, fair shares and fair group decisions. They build Social Awareness in classrooms, backyards and shared community spaces.

What students practice

  • Applying rules equally to everyone
  • Taking turns fairly
  • Sharing snacks, supplies and space fairly
  • Caring for shared community spaces
  • Making fair group decisions

What’s inside

  • 20 scripted scenes, from The No-Hats Rule to Twelve Sticker Sheets, each with a cast, a setting and dialogue
  • 100 discussion cards, five per scene, such as “Fastest Isn’t Fairest” and “Equal Shares Before Extras”
  • A detailed teacher script and a flexible outline
  • Objectives, materials (optional chart paper or a whiteboard, props like a cup of name sticks) and tips; 50 pages

A look inside

  • Whose Turn on the Swing?: five kids are waiting, so Nomvula suggests a count of fifty, which still gives Massimo a real turn.
  • Splitting the Cupcakes: extras are going to whoever asks first, until Mallory makes sure every student gets one cupcake before anyone gets a second.
  • Muddy Boots on the Park Bench: Nerissa wipes the mud off a bench because it belongs to the whole neighborhood.
  • Twelve Sticker Sheets: four kids pick one sheet at a time, and the order turns around every round.

How to use these community and fairness role play scenarios

  • Open with the 5–7 minute introduction
  • Act out a scene in 10–15 minutes and talk about what felt unfair and what the character did about it
  • Replay it with a different fair solution and compare the outcome
  • Close with 5–10 minutes of sharing, using chart paper to list classroom rules or tally a class vote

Grade fit

The fairness questions come straight from elementary life: who gets called on in math review, who gets picked last in PE, who sits in the middle of the back seat. Students can read the role play scripts or improvise their lines, so the set fits SEL time across Grades 2–5.

Questions teachers ask

Are all the scenes set at school?

No. 11 of the 20 scenes take place away from school, at places like a community pool, a garden, a park, a library and home.

How much time does a lesson need?

The detailed script plans 5–7 minutes of introduction, 10–15 minutes of role play and 5–10 minutes of sharing and discussion.
