About this resource

What children say to themselves is taking shape right now, and it echoes what the classroom celebrates. In Affirmation Stars, each kindergarten or first-grade student (Grades K–1) writes or draws a kind, true statement about themselves on a paper star, and the class hangs them up together. It builds the confidence behind Self-Awareness, in SEL activities that end with a class mobile on display.

What students practice

  • Learning what an affirmation is
  • Putting a kind statement about themselves into words or pictures
  • Sharing something they are proud of
  • Seeing their own words on display every day

What’s inside

  • A teacher script with timed steps, about 20 minutes, and a flexible outline
  • Star-Shaped Cutouts to cut out, write on and decorate
  • Affirmation Writing Prompts: 12 sentence starters, in two versions
  • Affirmation Stars Coloring Pages: five pages with 20 pre-written affirmations, a large single-star page and a list of all 20
  • Positive Affirmation Cards and Mobile Assembly Instructions in six steps; 46 pages

A look inside

  • Teacher script: “An affirmation is a positive statement we say to ourselves to remind us how amazing we are.”
  • Affirmation Writing Prompts: “I am good at”, “I am proud of” and “I am strong because”
  • Coloring page affirmations: “I can solve problems by thinking hard.” and “I am unique because I am me.”

How to use this affirmation stars kit

  • Explain that an affirmation reminds us of our good qualities, using examples like “I am a good friend” and “I can do hard things”
  • Give each child a star and markers to write or draw something they are proud of, using the sentence starters if they get stuck
  • Have students hold up their stars and share
  • String the stars into a Positive Affirmation Mobile, and use the coloring pages and cards for a second round
