About this resource

A student sits quietly with the wrong lunch because asking feels too hard. These self-advocacy reading comprehension passages teach Grade 2 readers, in ten texts at F&P levels K–M, how to say what they need, kindly and clearly. The set supports Relationship Skills, a CASEL competency, with a nod to self-management.

What students practice

  • Asking to be included
  • Asking for help without shame
  • Speaking up for a health or safety need
  • Asking for a turn without demanding
  • Speaking up when something feels unfair

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, from narrative nonfiction and a science text to a youth-advocacy biography
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Teacher’s Copy of 11 pages, with each passage beside its questions and the correct multiple-choice answers marked
  • 33-page student file, including an overview of the passages with F&P levels and SEL focus

A look inside

  • Can I Go Too?: narrative nonfiction about speaking up to be included.
  • I Asked for Help (and That’s Okay): a first-person reflection on overcoming hesitation.
  • Meet Eli: The Allergy Advocate: a student profile on health and safety self-advocacy.
  • Two Ways to Ask for a Turn: a compare-and-contrast piece on advocating without demanding.
  • The Girl Who Found Her Voice: a light biography on leadership through self-advocacy.

How to use these self-advocacy reading passages

  • Guided reading groups at levels K–M, using the Teacher’s Copy for quick prep
  • Partner reading, with the two open-ended questions as a talk prompt
  • SEL reading comprehension: read “What Does It Mean to Speak Up?” and talk about kind, clear ways to ask
  • Independent practice or homework

Grade fit

Written for Grade 2, with levels moving from K to M. The needs here are small and real (a turn, a pencil, an allergy), and a youth-advocacy biography at the end shows older kids doing the same thing.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
