About this resource

Snapping “I don’t KNOW!” at your brother in the karate hallway isn’t really about his hat. These stress and mental health scenario cards help students in Grades 2–6 notice when a packed Saturday, a perfect-score streak or a rough morning is weighing on them. Each open-ended card asks, “What could help your mind right now?” building Self-Management one steady moment at a time.

What students practice

  • Noticing stress signs in the body, thoughts and actions
  • Recognizing pressure that builds over time
  • Connecting a reaction to its real cause
  • Choosing what to step back from
  • Finding words to start a talk with a trusted adult

What’s inside

  • 60 scenarios in five themes, 12 each: Too Many Things at Once, Pressure to Do Well, Stress I Carry Around, Lightening My Own Load, Talking to Someone I Trust
  • Each scenario as an open-ended card (“What could help your mind right now?”) and a guided card with three questions
  • 120 journal pages, two per scenario
  • 158 pages

A look inside

  • The Fridge Spelling Tests: after a year of perfect Friday scores, you tell your brother, “I CAN’T. I have to study!”
  • The Coat at the Table: after a long day of tests, you sit at the kitchen table with your coat still zipped. The guided card asks, “What clues show the school day came home with you?”
  • The Counselor’s Open Door: after a week of daily tests, you walk past the counselor’s office twice, and your feet slow down in the doorway.

How to use these stress and mental health scenario cards

  • Read one of the stress and mental health scenarios from Too Many Things at Once at morning meeting or circle time and list the stress signs students notice
  • Use Talking to Someone I Trust in small groups or counseling sessions to practice how to start that conversation
  • Teach Lightening My Own Load as an SEL lesson, starting with The Club Sign-Up Sheet
  • Pair a card with its journal page for private reflection

Grade fit

The stress comes from places students know, like spelling tests, swim times and a friend mix-up at recess. Younger students can lean on the guided questions, which start with clues in the scene; Grade 6 students can use the open-ended card to talk about pressure and coping skills for stress in their own words.

Digital version

The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The fifth theme, Talking to Someone I Trust, places students next to a teacher, counselor, parent or caregiver at the moment they could speak up, as in The Counselor’s Cart and Grandma’s Garden Gloves.

Pairs well with

Pair with Stress and Mental Health Task Cards or Stress and Mental Health Conversation Cards.

Questions teachers ask

Do the scenarios deal with crisis situations?

The scenes stay with everyday stress: busy weeks, tests, practice schedules, a hard morning or a friend mix-up. The last theme guides students toward a trusted adult.

How do students respond in the digital version?

You share one link and choose open-ended or guided. Students respond on any device with no logins, then download an answer sheet to hand in.
