About this resource
Students talk about friends all day, but rarely about what friendship takes. These friendship conversation cards turn that into 102 morning meeting questions, from “What makes someone a friend and not just a person you know?” to how friendships change. They work for Grades 2–8 and build Relationship Skills.
What students practice
- Knowing what they look for in a friend
- Being a caring and fair friend
- Playing together and sharing a friend with others
- Building trust and loyalty
- Handling changes in a friendship
What’s inside
- 102 discussion questions in six focus areas, 17 in each
- Question types that mix personal stories, reflection, strategy and imagination
- 102 matching reflection sheets, two per page, for journals or writing centers
- 75 pages
A look inside
- “What makes someone a friend and not just a person you know?”
- “How do you and a friend come up with a pretend story to play?”
- “What helps you give a friend a chance to explain before you get upset?”
How to use these friendship conversation cards in morning meeting
- Morning meeting: one question, a turn-and-talk, then a few voices to the whole group
- Counseling groups or an SEL lesson, choosing a focus area such as Trust and loyalty
- A journal prompt with the matching reflection sheet
- Partner talk while students wait for a transition
Grade fit
The questions ask about students’ own friendships, so younger students answer from recess and older students from group chats and teams. That range makes them good conversation starters for middle school as well as elementary.
Digital version
The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.
