About this resource

Gratitude starts with noticing: the bus driver, a hand-me-down that became a favorite, a laugh from someone you love. These gratitude conversation cards turn that noticing into 102 morning meeting questions, from “What tiny thing made you smile this week?” to ways of saying thank you. For Grades 2–8, they build Social Awareness by pointing students outward, toward the people, helpers and little moments around them.

What students practice

  • Noticing what they are thankful for
  • Saying thank you in meaningful ways
  • Appreciating the helpers in their lives
  • Spotting little good things
  • Finding gratitude on hard days
  • Building a gratitude habit

What’s inside

102discussion questions grouped in six focus areas, 17 in each: things I am thankful for, saying thank you, people who help me, little good things, gratitude on hard days, and making gratitude a habit
102matching reflection sheets, two per page
75pages
  • Cards printed six per page (17 pages)
  • A numbered question list with types, led by Observation (22)

A look inside

“What does a bus driver do for you that is easy to miss?”
“Which helpers do their work while you are asleep at night?”
“How can you feel thankful without pretending everything is fine?”
“How could a gratitude jar work in your classroom?”

How to use these gratitude conversation cards in morning meeting

Morning meetingOne card to open the day, a turn-and-talk, a few shared answers
Thank-you writingPair the thank-you-note card (Q22) with its reflection sheet so students draft a note
Question of the day with the little-good-things cards, answered on sticky notes as students arrive
Partner or team-building SEL activities using the people-who-help-me cards

Grade fit

Many cards are concrete enough for second graders: a favorite snack, a pet, a school helper. Questions such as “Why might a hard day make you thankful for an ordinary one?” give older students more to work with, so the set holds up as conversation starters for middle school.

Digital version

The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The hard-days cards don’t ask students to cover up sadness. One asks why “just be thankful” might not help someone who feels sad, which keeps the set gentle for a student going through a rough time.

Pairs well with

Questions teachers ask

Will students be told to just look on the bright side?

No. The hard-days questions ask how gratitude can help even when a day stays hard, and why “just be thankful” might not help someone who feels sad.

Does it include thank-you note writing?

Yes. One card asks what students could write in a thank-you note to someone in their family, and its reflection sheet gives them space to write.
