About this resource

Saying thank you is easy. Noticing what deserves thanks takes practice. These gratitude reading comprehension passages give Grade 3 readers ten short texts at F&P levels N–P, each about a moment when someone notices help, kindness or a good thing that was easy to miss. The set builds Social Awareness, one of the five CASEL competencies, right inside your reading block.

What students practice

  • Noticing help and kindness that are easy to miss
  • Choosing a thank-you that fits the person
  • Building a gratitude habit, such as naming three good things
  • Telling real gratitude apart from polite words
  • Finding word meanings and text structure in a passage

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels N–P, in ten text types, from narrative nonfiction to a school news feature
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage, several on word meaning and text structure
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Dog-Walking Neighbor: Persis works out a thank-you that fits what Mr. Peregrine loves most.
  • Why Thank-Yous Make People Help Again: a science-based piece on what happens when helpers are thanked.
  • Posy Finds a New Burrow: a field mouse settles into a new home on a sunny hill.
  • Thank-Yous Then and Now: a girl and her grandmother compare old letters with today’s phone calls.
  • The Great Gratitude Scavenger Hunt: third graders search their school for good things hidden in plain sight.

How to use these gratitude reading passages

  • Guided reading groups at levels N–P, one passage per session
  • Partner reading, with the two open-ended questions as a talk prompt
  • SEL reading comprehension: read “Three Good Things Before Bed” and start the routine as a class
  • Independent practice or homework, checked with the answer key
