About this resource

Second graders light up when you ask what they’re good at. These self-esteem reading comprehension passages for Grade 2 build on that with ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about naming strengths, trying something new and feeling proud without bragging. Each one grows Self-Awareness, one of the five CASEL competencies.

What students practice

  • Naming a strength and using it
  • Trying something new, like a tall climbing wall
  • Feeling proud without bragging
  • Handling it when a friend does something better
  • Understanding what confidence really means

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, in ten text types from a student profile to a concept explainer
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for reflection and discussion
  • A short takeaway after each passage
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 34 pages

A look inside

  • Meet Avery: The Super Sorter: Avery sorts the class supply bins by color and size and knows it is one of her strengths.
  • The Inchworm Who Could Climb Anything: slow Cosmo climbs up a bush to free Croaky the crow’s stuck kite.
  • Bragging or Being Proud?: Ailani tells a classmate, “I’m the best reader in this class,” while Bruno says, “I’m proud I finished my chapter book.”
  • Astrid’s Friend Draws Better Horses: Astrid feels small, remembers her own strengths and asks her friend for tips.

How to use these self-esteem reading passages in Grade 2

  • A read-aloud of What Is Confidence? to open an SEL block
  • The guided reading table, moving from level K up to M
  • Partner reads of the lower-level early passages, such as Bryce Tries the Climbing Wall
  • Quick checking of the multiple-choice work with the answer key

Grade fit

Second graders are still sorting out the line between being proud and showing off, so the set keeps it concrete: a bragging line beside a proud one, a chin-up pride posture, a grandson teaching Grandpa a magic trick. Levels K to M keep sentences short, which makes these reading passages with questions manageable for younger readers.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The multiple-choice answers are on the last page of the PDF. The open-ended questions invite personal answers, so they have no key.

Does the bragging passage include an unkind line?

Yes, briefly. In Bragging or Being Proud?, Ailani tells a classmate he is slow, and the passage shows how others feel about it next to Bruno’s proud words.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. You share one link, students open it on any device without logging in, and they download an answer sheet at the end.
