About this resource
A toy train who refuses to rest until he stalls on a bridge is a good way into a talk about rest. These self-care reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about the small routines that keep a young body and mood in good shape: sleep, water, breakfast, play, rest and time with people who help them feel good. It’s a Self-Management set that fits right into your reading block.
What students practice
- Stopping to rest when the body runs low
- Following a simple bedtime routine
- Drinking water and eating breakfast for energy
- Making time for fun and for people who help them feel good
- Finding key details and the lesson in a short text
What’s inside
- 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, each in a different text type, from a fable and a how-to guide to a class news feature
- 5 multiple-choice questions after every passage
- 2 open-ended questions per passage for writing or talk
- A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
- 34 pages
A look inside
- Hinto the Toy Train Runs Low: Hinto waves off the teddy bear’s advice to stop at the station, then runs out of battery in the middle of the bridge.
- How to Get Ready for Bed: bath, pajamas, brushing teeth, a quiet story and lights out, one step at a time.
- Hazel’s Droopy Afternoons: Hazel works out why she feels droopy every afternoon and starts taking water breaks at recess and lunch.
- Rainbow Plate Week with Dad: Hank tries foods of every color with his dad, from red peppers to purple grapes.
How to use these self-care reading passages in Grade 2
- Guided reading groups: start with Hinto at level K and work up to the four level M passages
- Health or SEL lessons, such as pairing “Why Moving Makes Your Heart Strong” with a talk about how the heart works
- Morning meeting: read “Feel-Good Fridays in Second Grade” aloud and ask which of the class’s self-care activities your students would pick
- Reading buddies, with the two open-ended questions as something to talk about together
Grade fit
Levels climb from K to M, so the opening passages suit readers still building fluency and the last four sit at level M. The topics come straight from a second grader’s day: a rushed breakfast in the car, thirst after recess, drawing dragons after school, a bedtime story with an aunt. A short takeaway closes each of these reading passages with questions.
