About this resource

Glasses, freckles, a long name new people say wrong, a big loud laugh. These self-acceptance task cards ask students how they feel about the things that make them who they are, including the parts they can’t change and the days they don’t like themselves much. Each of the 100 cards, written for Grades 2–5, builds Self-Awareness, with a steady focus on treating yourself like a friend.

What students practice

  • Naming what they like about being themselves
  • Feeling okay about differences like glasses, curls or an accent
  • Being gentle with themselves after a mistake
  • Accepting things they can’t change
  • Treating themselves the way they’d treat a friend
  • Knowing they are worthy without being perfect

What’s inside

  • Five Set A themes (Grades 2–3, A1–A50): I like being me; Things that make me different; Being kind to myself; Things I can’t change about me; Liking myself on hard days
  • Five Set B themes (Grades 4–5, B1–B50): Accepting my whole self; Differences I can celebrate; Treating myself like a friend; Imperfect and still worthy; Taking care of how I feel about me
  • 100 cards, 10 for each theme, with a choice of 2 or 4 cards per page
  • A separate file of reflection sheets with a page for each card: 81 pages of cards and 103 journal pages

A look inside

  • Set A: “Your cake for the bake sale comes out lopsided. How do you feel? How could you be gentle with yourself right now?”
  • Set B: “You’d forgive a friend for being late in a second, but you can’t forgive yourself. Why is it harder to forgive yourself? What would a good friend do?”
  • Set B: “You keep a box of notes, drawings, and photos that make you smile. How does this box help you on hard days? What else could go in it?”

How to use these self-acceptance task cards

  • Morning meeting with the I like being me cards (A1–A10)
  • An SEL lesson, small group or counseling session with Treating myself like a friend (B21–B30) for students who are hard on themselves
  • Personal journaling on the reflection sheets, for cards like B46, a plan for days students don’t like themselves much

Grade fit

Set A, for Grades 2–3, starts with visible differences, such as being left-handed or the tallest in the lunch line, and simple kindness after a paper boat sinks. Set B, for Grades 4–5, asks students to hold two things at once, like pride in being kind and embarrassment about being messy, and to see they are worthy without an award.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

Some cards touch on personal things, including a learning difference (B15), a peanut allergy (A36), an accent (B12) and still sleeping with a night-light (B39). Read them ahead if a student in your group might feel singled out.

Pairs well with

These task cards for students pair well with Self-Acceptance Scenario Cards and Self-Acceptance Worksheets.

Questions teachers ask

How is this different from a self-esteem set?

These cards are about how students see and treat themselves, including the parts they can’t change, rather than confidence in their abilities.

Can students work on these alone?

Yes. The reflection sheets work for personal journaling, and in the digital version each student types answers on their own device.
