About this resource
A zebra paints berry dots on her stripes, and the rain rinses them right off. These self-acceptance reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about liking the things that make them who they are, from a quiet voice to a left-handed drawing hand. Each passage ends with a short takeaway before the questions, and this SEL reading comprehension set builds Self-Awareness, one of the five CASEL competencies.
What students practice
- Liking the things that make them who they are
- Being kind to themselves after an oops
- Letting small wobbles stay instead of chasing perfect
- Accepting things they cannot change, like freckles or stripes
- Answering detail and meaning questions about a short text
What’s inside
- Multiple-choice answer key on the final page
A look inside
How to use these self-acceptance reading comprehension passages
Grade fit
Second graders notice a lot about themselves, and the passages meet them there: humming, freckles, a loud laugh, a love of bugs. Levels climb gently from K to M, so readers who need support start with the first stories and stronger readers move on to the explainer and the science piece. They are short reading passages with questions, sized for a seven- or eight-year-old’s stamina.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Questions teachers ask
Is there an answer key?
Yes, for the multiple-choice questions. It is on the last page of the PDF. The two open-ended questions have no single right answer.
Are the stories about real children?
No. The PDF notes that all people, places and events in the passages are fictional.
Do students need accounts for the digital version?
No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without logging in.
