About this resource
Understanding another person’s experience doesn’t happen automatically. These perspective taking task cards give Grades 2–5 structured chances to slow down, consider a viewpoint different from their own and look past their first reaction. They build Social Awareness, the CASEL competency at the heart of the skill.
What students practice
- Considering how another person feels
- Thinking about what someone might have intended
- Slowing down before reacting
- Noticing that the same scenario can be read differently
- Working out a thoughtful response
What’s inside
- 100 task cards in two sets: Set A (50 cards, Grades 2–3) grounded in the social world of early elementary students, and Set B (50 cards, Grades 4–5) with shifting friendships, fairness and group work
- Print 2 cards or 4 cards per page
- 100 reflection sheets, one per card
- 182 pages: a card file of 80 and a reflection file of 102
A look inside
- Set A: “Your friend didn’t clap for you after your presentation. What might be going on with them? Could it mean something else?”
- Set B: “You weren’t invited to a birthday party and feel hurt. What are some possible reasons the person didn’t invite you?”
- Set B: “Your teacher gave you feedback that felt unfair. What might their intention have been?”
How to use these perspective taking task cards
- SEL lessons on empathy, fairness and social awareness
- Morning meeting discussion starters
- Class meetings after a misunderstanding or conflict
- Journal writing prompts and written reflection
Grade fit
These task cards for students come in two sets. Set A is labelled for Grades 2–3 and Set B for Grades 4–5. A missing round of applause suits the first, while an unfair-feeling piece of feedback from a teacher belongs to the second.
Digital version
The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask
What if students read a card differently from each other?
That is part of the learning. Each card sets up one point of view and asks for the fuller picture, so a disagreement opens the discussion.
Do students need accounts for the digital version?
No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without logging in.
