About this resource

Most classroom disagreements come down to two students who haven’t yet heard each other out. These perspective taking reading comprehension passages teach Grade 4 readers to understand before they respond, in ten texts at F&P levels Q–S. They build empathy and Social Awareness, a CASEL competency, and ask students to show what drove each character’s point of view, not just what happened.

What students practice

  • Seeing how past experiences shape a point of view
  • Moving from frustration to empathy
  • Looking at what is underneath a behavior
  • Challenging an assumption about a student who sat alone
  • Weighing different ways to support a friend

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, from compare-and-contrast and a science text to an accessibility profile
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key for all 50 multiple-choice questions
  • 34 pages, including an overview of the passages with F&P level, text type and SEL focus

A look inside

  • The Same Story, Different Feelings: a compare-and-contrast passage on how past experiences shape perspective.
  • Through the Eyes of a Sibling: a first-person reflection on shifting from frustration to empathy.
  • How Trees Communicate Underground: a science text on what lies beneath behavior.
  • The Student Who Sat Alone: narrative nonfiction about challenging assumptions.
  • Meet Amara: A Student Advocate for Accessibility: a profile on disability awareness and inclusive thinking.

How to use these perspective taking reading passages

  • Guided reading groups at levels Q–S
  • Partner reading, with the open-ended questions as a talk prompt
  • SEL reading comprehension: read “How to Understand Someone’s Point of View” and talk about what drives a character’s view
  • Independent practice or homework, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

These reading passages with questions are written for Grade 4, with levels rising from Q to S. Siblings, a class election and a park designed by kids give fourth graders familiar ground for weighing multiple views, and the S-level accessibility and community pieces stretch strong readers.
