About this resource
Kindness is harder when the girl who shares your music stand said yesterday that your clarinet sounded like a goose. These kindness scenario cards for Grades 2–6 mix moments like that with easier ones at home, at school and around town, 60 in all, and each open-ended card asks “What kind thing could you say or do?” Students practice Social Awareness by noticing what another person, or creature, might need.
What students practice
- Noticing small needs at home
- Spotting quick chances to be kind to people they don’t know well
- Using encouraging words that cheer on effort
- Choosing kindness when it costs something
- Caring gently for animals, plants and living things
What’s inside
- 60 scenario cards in five themes of 12: Kindness at Home, Small Acts That Matter, Encouraging Words, Kindness When It’s Hard, Kindness to Animals and Living Things
- Open-ended and guided versions of every card (the guided card asks three questions)
- 120 journal pages, one open-ended and one guided per scenario
- 158 pages
A look inside
- The Bucket Drum Set: you raise two wooden spoons over the biggest bucket ten minutes into your baby sister’s nap.
- The Watercolor Garden: Grandma props up the painting from her very first class; the sunflowers lean and the sky has run into the grass. “Five more classes to go,” she says.
- The Kitchen Cricket: your uncle raises a sneaker over a cricket by the fridge, and the guided card asks what you could say before it comes down.
How to use these kindness scenario cards
- Read a Kindness at Home card at morning meeting or circle time and gather ideas for a small, caring action
- Teach Kindness When It’s Hard in an SEL lesson; these cards ask for kindness in a hurry, when it means giving something up, or toward someone who wasn’t kind first
- Use the guided cards for partner work on Encouraging Words
- Assign the journal pages as writing practice; the guided page asks for a kind and caring way to help
Grade fit
The scenes run from a double stroller at a heavy door to a sister’s volleyball tryout and an old cat struggling to jump onto the bed. Younger students can name a kind action, and older students, up to Grade 6, can wrestle with the kindness scenarios where being kind costs something.
Digital version
The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
