About this resource

Who is my friend, and what makes someone a good one? Those questions fill a young child’s day. The Friendship Flower SEL activity kit for kindergarten and Grades K–1 turns them into a craft: every petal of a paper flower names one quality of a good friend. It builds kindness, sharing and caring, a Relationship Skills focus.

What students practice

  • Naming qualities of a good friend
  • Choosing which quality matters most
  • Showing those qualities every day
  • Listening as a way to be a good friend

What’s inside

  • A teacher script with timed steps, plus a flexible outline for teachers who prefer their own words
  • A Friendship Flower Template: flower pieces to color, cut and assemble, plus large cut-out petals and a flower center
  • A Qualities of a Good Friend List with 32 friendship words in four groups
  • A five-question Friendship Reflection Worksheet and five flower coloring pages
  • A Bulletin Board Display Template for a classroom Friendship Garden; 41 pages in all

A look inside

  • Teacher script: “Each petal will show one thing that makes a good friend.”
  • Qualities of a Good Friend list: 32 words in four groups, such as Kindness and Empathy and Fun and Positivity
  • Friendship Reflection: “Which quality do you think is the most important and why?”

How to use this friendship flower kit

  • Ask what makes a good friend and write the class’s ideas on the board, from kind to makes me laugh
  • Students build their flowers, writing or drawing one quality on each petal
  • Hold a quick sharing round that celebrates each flower
  • Turn the flowers into a Friendship Garden on the bulletin board

Grade fit

The petal craft, drawing option and short reflection suit kindergarten and first grade. As SEL activities go, it pairs a craft with talk, and these friendship activities fit a start-of-year community unit.

Pairs well with

Add Friendship Bracelets for a giving activity, or The Friendship Circle for sharing circles.

Questions teachers ask
