About this resource
The blue paint is gone, and Otis still wants a sky. These flexible thinking reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about the small changes that fill a second grader’s day: a canceled playdate, a moved seat, a new lunch line. Each one helps young readers notice what changed, name how they feel and try another way. It’s SEL reading comprehension that fits your Self-Management teaching.

- Naming the feeling that comes with a change

A look inside
- Linnea’s Playdate Is Canceled: Linnea feels sad when her friend has to visit relatives, then tries a new card game with her little brother and has fun after all.
- Marta the Stream Meets a Rock: a little stream can’t go straight, so she finds a way to flow around the rock and keep going.
- No Blue Paint Left: Otis feels stuck when the blue runs out, then paints a pink and orange sunset sky instead.
- Meet Nayeli: The Plan B Pal: a recess regular shares how she learned to switch plans when games change.
How to use these flexible thinking reading passages in Grade 2
- Guided reading groups: start with Linnea at level K and move up to the four level M passages
- Reading partners: pair up for Two Ways to Meet a Substitute and compare how Ludo and Mabel handle the new morning meeting
- SEL circles: read Three Steps for a Plan Change together and talk through each step
- Quick checks with the answer key after independent reading
Grade fit
The passages rise from level K to level M, so the first few suit readers still building fluency. The changes are ones second graders know well, like a new table, a substitute teacher or a reshuffled lunch line, and a bendy straw makes the idea of flexible thinking concrete. Takeaways are short and plainly stated, which keeps these reading passages with questions within reach.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The multiple-choice answers for all 10 passages are on the last page of the PDF. The open-ended questions are for reflection and discussion, so they have no fixed answer.
Which text types are included?
Ten different ones: narrative nonfiction, a fable, a concept explainer, a how-to guide, a science passage, a first-person reflection, a compare-and-contrast piece, a problem-and-solution story, a student profile and a school news feature.
Are the children in the passages real?
No. The PDF notes that all people, places and events in the passages are fictional.
