About this resource

Recess moves indoors, the field trip bus runs late, a friend gets sick on play day. These flexible thinking conversation cards turn moments like those into 102 morning meeting questions about changed plans, new routines and trying another way. For Grades 2–8, they build Self-Management by helping students adjust when things go differently than they pictured.

What students practice

  • Rolling with plans that change
  • Trying another way when one isn’t working
  • Changing their minds when a new idea makes sense
  • Settling into new places and routines
  • Handling big feelings about change
  • Being okay with different

What’s inside

  • 102 discussion questions organized in six focus areas, 17 each: when plans change, trying another way, changing my mind, new places and new routines, big feelings when things change, and being okay with different
  • Cards on 17 full-color pages, six per page
  • 102 matching reflection sheets (two per page, 51 pages)
  • A numbered question list with a type beside each prompt
  • 75 pages

A look inside

  • “How is a changed plan different from a ruined plan?”
  • “How is changing your mind different from giving up?”
  • “How is accepting a change different from liking it?”
  • “When might being flexible not be the best idea?”

How to use these flexible thinking conversation cards in morning meeting

  • Morning meeting on a day the schedule shifts: pull a when-plans-change card and let partners turn and talk
  • Conversation circles: choose a few related questions from one area, or let students draw one at random
  • Counseling or small groups for students facing a change, using cards from new places and big feelings
  • SEL reflection journals with the matching sheets

Grade fit

Younger students know these moments well: indoor recess, a substitute teacher, a new seat in class. Older students can take on harder ones, such as why a change they did not choose feels harder, so the set also works as conversation starters for middle school.

Digital version

The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

Practice with Flexible Thinking Scenario Cards or Flexible Thinking Worksheets.

Questions teachers ask

Does the set cover resilience or bouncing back?

No. It stays with adjusting to change: changed plans, new ways, new places and the feelings that come with them.

Is there a question about a new sibling or a move?

Yes. One card asks what feelings come up when a new baby or pet joins the family, and another asks what students would learn first if they moved to a new country.
