About this resource

One invitation can change a lunch table. These diversity and inclusion reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 readers ten texts at F&P levels Q–S, with a coral reef, an Olympian and an International Day celebration. The set builds Social Awareness, one of the five CASEL competencies, as fourth graders practice being allies.

What students practice

  • Noticing what belonging feels like and the small actions behind it
  • Reacting to something different with respect
  • Being an ally at school without taking over
  • Challenging a stereotype by making a real connection
  • Seeing why diverse teams solve problems better

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, in text types such as how-to guides, science pieces and student profiles
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key covering all 50 inclusion multiple-choice questions
  • 36 pages, with an overview page of levels, text types and SEL focus

A look inside

  • The Lunch Table Shift: a new student arrives, and one invitation changes the group’s dynamic.
  • Meet Ibtihaj Muhammad: the Olympian’s story and what representation in sports means.
  • Why Coral Reefs Need Variety: reefs thrive because of diversity.
  • The International Day Mix-Up: a celebration almost leaves several cultural groups out until students speak up.
  • From Stereotype to Story: a reflection on making a real connection instead of keeping a distance.

How to use these inclusion reading passages

  • Literacy centers or small groups at levels Q–S, with one group per narrative nonfiction text
  • Pair reading with a shared question about what the ally did
  • SEL reading comprehension: use How to Be an Ally at School to talk about everyday moves that make someone feel valued
  • Homework with the full 50-question answer key
