About this resource

Zeke’s new game profile shows his real name, school and town to anyone who looks. These digital citizenship reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 readers ten passages at F&P levels Q–S for the moments fourth graders now meet with more independence: setting up profiles, searching for report facts, posting to class pages and chatting inside games. Each one is a Responsible Decision-Making choice made in a real online setting.

What students practice

  • Keeping profiles and photos free of private details
  • Searching with strong keywords and reading past the top result
  • Telling a news story from an ad dressed up as news
  • Never meeting an online contact in person
  • Using reporting, blocking and muting tools
  • Building strong passphrases

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S in ten text types, from a game avatar’s story to a science piece on packets and servers
  • A brief takeaway after each reading
  • 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions per passage, tied to students’ own online lives
  • MCQ answer key on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Photo That Showed Too Much: Velma and her dad crop a birdhouse photo that shows her house number before it goes on the class blog.
  • The Avatar Who Forgot to Be Kind: a masked player types mean things until one teammate’s kind message changes how he plays.
  • The Classmate Who Wasn’t Really a Classmate: a player who claims to be the new kid asks Zayn to meet at a park, and Zayn tells his mom instead of replying.
  • How a Message Travels Across the Internet: why copies can stay saved on servers even after you delete your own.

How to use these digital citizenship reading passages in Grade 4

  • Small groups at levels Q–S, starting with The Profile Anyone Could See
  • Literacy centers or SEL reading comprehension, for example with News Story or Advertisement?
  • Read How to Search Smarter aloud before a computer-lab session
  • Check the multiple-choice answers with the key on the last page

Grade fit

Fourth graders are setting up game profiles and searching for report facts, and the passages are built around exactly that. Levels move from Q to S, with the comment moderator profile, the family passphrase night and the packet-and-server science piece at S, so these reading passages with questions get harder as the ideas do.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

Yes. In The Classmate Who Wasn’t Really a Classmate, Zayn follows his family rule never to meet online contacts in person; he tells his mom, and they take a screenshot, block and report.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without logging in.
