How to use these coping skills reading passages with fourth graders
Grade fit
Fourth graders already know a few calming tricks, so this set focuses on choosing among them and using them in public places like an assembly or a wedding. As SEL reading comprehension, the levels Q to S fit on-grade readers, and the class experiment passage adds data and graphs that fourth graders handle well in these reading passages with questions.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The multiple-choice answers sit on the last page of the PDF. The two open questions per passage have no single answer.
Do the passages say when to get an adult?
Yes. The Calm Ladder pairs a big feeling with a calm spot plus a trusted adult, and in the train station passage Dawit holds Dad’s hand the whole time.
Do students need accounts for the digital version?
No. You share one link, students open it on any device without logging in, and they download an answer sheet at the end.
