About this resource

The class votes 13 to 12 for an indoor movie, and twelve kids slump in their seats. These community and fairness scenario cards take Grades 2–6 students into 60 moments where the whole group matters: shared supplies, crowded spaces, class rules and the difference between fair and equal. Each open-ended card asks, “What would be fair and helpful here?” building Social Awareness about class, school and neighborhood.

What students practice

  • Thinking about the whole class when the group makes a choice
  • Caring for shared supplies and spaces
  • Telling fair and equal apart
  • Understanding the reasons behind rules and who they protect
  • Working together on projects that help others

What’s inside

  • 60 scenario cards in five themes: My Class Community, Shared Supplies and Spaces, Fair Isn’t Always Equal, Rules and Why They Matter, Making a Difference (12 per theme)
  • Open-ended cards with “What would be fair and helpful here?” and guided cards with three questions
  • Two journal pages for each scenario
  • 158 pages in total

A look inside

  • The Class Pencil Cup: five sharp pencils, a broken sharpener, and you grab three while four kids wait behind you.
  • The Early Bus Line: Bus 9 has the longest route, so its riders leave five minutes early, and kids at your table groan.
  • The Council Ballot: one candidate promises a pajama day every Friday; the other wants to fix the torn nets on the basketball hoops.

How to use these community and fairness scenario cards

  • Pull a Fair Isn’t Always Equal card at morning meeting and talk through how to respond to “That’s not fair!”
  • Teach Rules and Why They Matter as an SEL lesson; in The Wheel Bin Rule, the club leader hands the student the marker to write a new rule
  • Run the guided cards with partners or small groups and compare what different students think is fair
  • Give a Making a Difference card and its journal page as independent work, or add it to your fairness activities at a center

Grade fit

Pencil cups, recess balls and bus seats are fairness questions second graders know firsthand. Bigger ones, like how to spend a fifty-dollar class prize or whom to vote for in a student council race, keep these fairness scenarios useful through Grade 6.

Digital version

The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

Is the set about fairness or about community?

Both. Fair Isn’t Always Equal is one theme; the others cover class community, shared spaces, rules and making a difference, with scenes like an empty umbrella bucket and a flattened flower strip.

How many cards print on a page?

Four. Both card versions print four to a page in black and white, so they are easy to copy or laminate and sort by theme.
