About this resource
Five glitter glue sticks and a whole class that wants them: second graders know that problem well. These community and fairness reading comprehension passages help Grade 2 readers see that a classroom, a school and a neighborhood work better when everyone pitches in and every person gets a fair chance. The ten short texts at F&P levels K–M build Social Awareness, bringing SEL into your reading block alongside early reading skills.

A look inside
- Pia, the Class Mail Carrier: when Pia leaves early and no one covers her job, the notes never reach families.
- Sorrel and the Shared Forest Path: a badger gathers her forest neighbors to agree on a fair rule for keeping their path clear.
- The Basketball Court Rule: Prue notices that only the older kids get the court at recess and tells her teacher, who helps make a fair schedule.
- Color Cards Make Gym Teams Fair: a class draws color cards for gym teams so no one is picked last.
How to use these community and fairness reading passages in Grade 2
- Morning meeting: read Two Classroom Job Charts and look at how your own jobs are shared
- Partner reading, with partners talking through the two open-ended questions
- Small groups that start at level K with Pia and finish at level M
- A short read-and-talk block, such as Not Enough Glitter Glue before your own supplies run low
Grade fit
Most passages are set somewhere a second grader already knows: cubbies, the recess court, gym class, a forest path in a fable. Levels run from K to M, and the ideas stay concrete. What Is Fair? explains fairness as everyone getting a chance and following the same rules, with classroom and playground examples. These reading passages with questions give young readers a way to talk about fair and unfair without pointing at anyone in the room.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
