About this resource

Ask before a hug. Notice when a friend needs space. These respecting boundaries reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M, from a concept guide to a turtle science piece and a repair how-to. The set builds Relationship Skills, one of the five CASEL competencies, in words young readers can picture.

What students practice

  • Asking permission before a hug, a seat or a shared space
  • Noticing when a friend needs quiet or room
  • Saying “not right now” without hurting feelings
  • Knowing the body belongs to its owner and that saying no is allowed
  • Fixing things after a boundary is crossed by accident

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, in a mix of how-to guides, science texts and real-world features
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Teacher’s Copy (11 pages) with each boundaries passage beside its questions and the correct answers marked
  • 33-page student file with an overview of all 10 passages, their levels and SEL focus

A look inside

  • Why Some Animals Have Warning Colors: animals use color and posture to signal “back off,” much like human boundaries.
  • Meet Julia: The Autism Advocate from Sesame Street: a Sesame Street character shows that some people need quiet and space.
  • Why We Use Crosswalks and Stop Signs: public rules are compared with the personal rules that protect people.
  • How to Say “No” Without Being Mean: gentle sentence starters for “not right now” or “I need a break.”
  • Why Turtles Hide in Their Shells: needing space or quiet time turns out to be a very human thing.

How to use these respecting boundaries reading passages

  • Small-group reading at levels K–M, then a talk about what each character could say or do
  • Partner reading, with the open-ended questions as a talk prompt about personal space
  • SEL reading comprehension: read What Are Boundaries? together and talk about why boundaries help everyone feel safe
  • Counseling or restorative conversations about physical boundaries
  • Morning work or homework, checked with the Teacher’s Copy

Grade fit

Written for Grade 2 readers, with the levels climbing from K to M. They are short reading passages with questions, so the early texts keep the ideas concrete (a turtle, a crosswalk) while the last ones ask for a repair plan.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The Body Belongs to You is a health and safety text about the body and the right to say no, written in clear, safe language. Read it yourself first so you can decide whether to use it with the whole class or in a smaller group.
