About this resource

Reading a story about kindness is not the same as working through a moment and deciding what you would do. These empathy task cards give Grades 2–5 low-stakes chances to notice what someone else is feeling and think about how to respond. They build Social Awareness.

What students practice

  • Recognizing what someone else is feeling
  • Considering why they feel that way
  • Choosing a response that shows genuine care
  • Showing empathy even when their own mood is different
  • Responding when others laugh at someone

What’s inside

  • 50 task cards for Grades 2–3 (Set A): kindness, inclusion and recognizing how others feel
  • 50 task cards for Grades 4–5 (Set B): more layered situations involving hurt feelings, misunderstandings and competing needs
  • Two print layouts: 2 cards per page for discussion, 4 cards per page to save paper
  • 100 reflection sheets, one per card, for written response and independent practice
  • 182 pages in all: 80 in the card file and 102 in the reflection sheet file

A look inside

  • Set A: “Your friend is sad because their pet is sick. What can you say or do to show that you care about their feelings?”
  • Set B: “Your friend is having a great day, but you’re feeling down. How can you show empathy for their excitement even when your mood is different?”
  • Set B: “A classmate shared something personal and others giggled. How might they feel?”

How to use these empathy task cards

  • SEL lessons on empathy, compassion and emotional literacy
  • Morning meeting discussions and community-building activities
  • Counseling groups focused on relationships and peer dynamics
  • Class meetings after a moment of hurt or exclusion
