About this resource

Recognizing what a classmate feels is only half the skill. Role-playing emotional responses gives Grades 1–3 deliberate practice with the other half: knowing how to respond when someone is upset, nervous, embarrassed or excited, in a way that helps. This empathy SEL activity kit builds Social Awareness through acting out caring responses.

What students practice

  • Reading feelings on faces
  • Explaining what might cause a feeling
  • Choosing a response that helps
  • Acting out a caring response
  • Reflecting on empathy they have received

What’s inside

  • A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: four steps, about 30 minutes
  • 8 Emotion Face Cards, each with a “Fun Tip” prompt: happy, sad, angry, scared, nervous, surprised, worried, excited
  • 12 Scenario Cards, each with a circle-the-feeling line and a response question
  • An Emotion Matching Worksheet with five short situations
  • An Empathy Reflection Sheet (four questions, 2 versions) and an Emotion Drawing Page; 19 pages in all

A look inside

  • Scenario Card: “Your friend made a mistake while reading aloud, and now they look embarrassed and quiet.”
  • Emotion Face Card, Nervous: “What helps you feel calm when you’re nervous?”
  • Empathy Reflection: “Can you think of a time when someone showed empathy to you? How did it feel?”

How to use this role-playing emotional responses kit

  • Hold up each Emotion Face Card, ask what feeling students see and introduce the word empathy
  • Each student mimics a card’s face and names something that might cause that feeling
  • Read scenarios such as a lost toy or a classmate not invited to a party; students circle the feeling and act out a caring response
  • Finish with the matching worksheet, reflection sheet and drawing page

Grade fit

Eight familiar feelings and simple classroom, playground and home scenes suit Grades 1–3 in early elementary. It is one of the SEL activities that makes empathy active, since students rehearse a response instead of only discussing one.

Pairs well with

Try Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes for perspective taking, or Story Time Role-Play for younger students.
