About this resource

The projector won’t turn on, the bounce house won’t blow up and the kite won’t fly without wind. These flexible thinking task cards ask students what they could do when plans, places or routines change on them. There are 100 cards for Grades 2–5, and they build Self-Management, from going along with a changed plan to spotting rigid thoughts and letting go of doing things their own way.

What students practice

  • Going along with a plan that changes
  • Trying another way when the first one keeps failing
  • Changing their mind and saying so
  • Having a Plan B ready
  • Noticing rigid thoughts and stretching them

What’s inside

  • Set A (Grades 2–3) has five themes: When plans change; Trying another way; Changing my mind; New places and new routines; Plan B
  • Set B (Grades 4–5) has five more: Rigid vs. flexible thinking; Unexpected changes; Seeing another way to do it; Letting go of ‘my way’; Being okay with ‘different’
  • 100 numbered cards (A1–A50, B1–B50), 10 per theme, in two print layouts: 2 or 4 per page
  • A matching journal PDF (103 pages) with a reflection sheet for each card, plus the 81-page card file

A look inside

Set A: “You and Grandpa planned to fly a kite, but there is no wind today. How could you bend your plan? What else could you and Grandpa do outside?”
Set B: “You picture your thinking as a stick that snaps or a rubber band that stretches. Which one fits you when plans change? When could you be more of a rubber band?”
Set B: “Your mom folds towels differently than you do, and it bugs you. Why might your way feel like the only right way? How could you let it go?”

How to use these flexible thinking task cards

Morning meetingRead a When plans change card (A1–A10) on a day your own schedule has shifted
An SEL lesson that starts from B4’s stick-or-rubber-band picture and works through Rigid vs. flexible thinking (B1–B10)
Small groups or counseling sessions on surprises, with Unexpected changes (B11–B20)

Grade fit

Set A, for Grades 2–3, keeps change small and concrete: a new cubby on the bottom row, a broken pencil, a recorder that squeaks. Set B, for Grades 4–5, names the thinking underneath, asking students to catch a thought like “It’s ruined” and decide whether it tells the whole story.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The cards stay on adjusting when plans, places, routines or ideas change, not on bouncing back from a failure. B4 (a stick that snaps or a rubber band that stretches) gives the class a picture it can come back to.

Questions teachers ask

The PDF says Flexibility and Adaptability. Is it the same set?

Yes. The printable files use the name Flexibility & Adaptability; the cards and journal pages are the ones described here.

Is this a growth mindset or resilience set?

No. These cards are about adjusting when plans, places, routines or ideas change, not about bouncing back after a failure.
