About this resource

“Not today, kiddo. My back needs a rest.” Even Grandpa sets boundaries. These boundaries and personal safety scenario cards give Grades 2–6 students 60 moments about personal space, saying “no” and “stop,” hearing someone else’s no, spotting everyday hazards and telling a trusted adult. Each open-ended card asks, “What is the safe, respectful choice?” so they work as social situation cards that build Relationship Skills on both sides of a boundary.

What students practice

  • Noticing when someone is too close and asking for room
  • Saying “no” and “stop” in a clear, strong voice
  • Stopping right away when someone else says no
  • Recognizing everyday hazards and checking plans with grown-ups
  • Telling a trusted adult, and knowing safety from tattling

What’s inside

  • 60 scenarios in five 12-card themes: My Personal Space, Saying “No” and “Stop”, Respecting Others’ “No”, Safe and Unsafe Situations, Telling a Trusted Adult
  • Two versions of each card: open-ended, with “What is the safe, respectful choice?”, and guided, with three questions
  • 120 journal pages that match the two versions
  • 158 pages, printed four cards to a page

A look inside

  • The Reunion Hug Pile: someone shouts, “Group hug!” and you end up squeezed in the middle of your cousins.
  • The Party Door Hug: you rush in for a hug, and your friend steps back and holds out her fist. The guided card asks, “What did your friend do when you opened your arms?”
  • The Ride Not on the Plan: a friend’s mom offers you a ride home, but this morning Grandpa said he would pick you up.

How to use these boundaries and personal safety scenario cards

  • Start with My Personal Space at morning meeting or circle time; personal boundaries scenarios like The Foam Finger and The Reading Nook Squeeze are easy ways in
  • Use Respecting Others’ “No” in small groups or counseling sessions to practice hearing a no and stopping right away
  • Teach Telling a Trusted Adult as an SEL lesson, using scenes like The Chirping Alarm to sort telling about safety from tattling
  • Laminate the cards and keep them sorted by theme, so they can be reused with your other personal boundaries activities

Grade fit

Second graders know hug piles, sleds and seat belts, and the guided questions keep them on what they can see in the scene. Grade 6 students get more out of the harder calls, like accepting a no without needing a reason.

Digital version

The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The scenarios focus on personal space with family and friends and on everyday hazards, like an off-leash dog or a cracked bike helmet. In The Big-Road Shortcut, a friend asks you to keep an unsafe secret: “Don’t tell, okay?”

Pairs well with

For more personal safety activities, pair with Boundaries and Personal Safety Task Cards or Personal Space and Boundaries Stop Think Act Cards.

Questions teachers ask

Is the set about personal space or safety?

Both. Three themes cover personal space and saying or hearing “no,” and two cover everyday hazards and telling a trusted adult.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. One link works on any device, and students download an answer sheet when they finish.
