About this resource
Minutes before judging at a bridge-building contest, a rival’s model cracks, and Pedro has spare glue. These kindness reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 readers ten passages at F&P levels Q–S about kindness when it is harder: toward a stranger, a rival or someone who was not kind first. The Social Awareness set looks past good intentions to the actions themselves.

A look inside
- The Substitute’s Rough Morning: when the projector breaks, Raisa and her classmates decide how to quiet down and explain the routines.
- Offering Help Without Embarrassing Anyone: notice quietly, offer privately, accept “no thanks” and keep it to yourself afterward.
- The Umbrella Who Opened for Everyone: Quigley, a lost-and-found umbrella, shelters whoever borrows it, even the kid who once kicked it across the room.
- Audiobooks for Mr. Pham: Samir records picture books that Mr. Pham plays over the phone for his faraway grandkids at bedtime.
How to use these kindness reading passages in Grade 4
- Small reading groups at levels Q–S
- SEL time: read “Quiet Helper, Camera Helper” and discuss kindness that helps versus kindness that shows off
- Literacy stations
- Sending a single passage home, such as “Kindness at the Laundromat”
Grade fit
Levels run from Q to S. Fourth graders can handle the harder questions here, like whether kindness depends on who deserves it, and the nonfiction gives them precise words: an explainer sorts niceness from kindness and compassion, and a science-based piece notes that some studies suggest kindness can ease stress. These reading passages with questions close with a class sewing blankets for shelter pets, a ready model for your own kindness activities.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Pair it with Kindness What Would You Do? Cards or Kindness Worksheets with multiple-choice scenarios.
