About this resource

Where does the push to begin a job come from, and what keeps it going? These motivation reading comprehension passages explore that question for Grade 3 in ten readings at F&P levels N–P. Lars rescues a stalled diorama with one index card, and a pencil waits impatiently for its owner to write a first line. It’s SEL reading comprehension for Self-Management, written for third-grade readers.

A look inside

  • Helpful Breaks and Sneaky Breaks: a short movement break set beside a screen break that stretches too long, with two questions to tell them apart.
  • Meet Meseret: The Bored-to-Busy Inventor: Meseret turns chores into games, like racing her dad to match socks while he folds towels.
  • Scales, Scales and More Scales: Niamh invents small challenges, playing softly, slowly, fast or loud, to keep violin practice going.
  • The Day I Got Curious About Volcanoes: a floating rock in science class leads Melek to a week of reading she chose on her own.

How to use these motivation reading passages in Grade 3

  • Reading groups working from level N to level P
  • Independent work, checked with the answer key
  • Opening a class talk about effort before a big assignment, with How to Find Your “Why” and its three questions
  • Reading Students Keep the Book Swap Going All Year together and asking why helpers showed up with no prizes

Grade fit

Levels N to P suit third graders moving into longer independent reading. The passages explain ideas in kid terms, such as why first tries feel hardest because practice strengthens connections in the brain. The questions check inference, vocabulary in context and text organization, so these reading passages with questions build reading skill while students think about their own effort.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
