About this resource
Nell faces a mountain of books and decides to put away just one. These motivation reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten texts at F&P levels K–M about getting started on a job, sticking with it when energy runs low and doing things for reasons of their own. This Self-Management set of SEL reading comprehension gives clear pictures of that push from inside.
What students practice
- Getting started with one small step
- Doing their part without reminders
- Remembering their own reason for a job
- Using short breaks to keep going
- Telling outside rewards from inside rewards

A look inside
- I Fed the Fish Without a Reminder: Ollie remembers to feed the family fish before anyone asks and feels proud of doing his job on his own.
- Okoth the Otter Remembers Why: Okoth wants to stay in his cozy den until he remembers river games with his sister.
- Why Birds Rest on Long Trips: many birds that fly long distances stop to rest and eat along the way.
- The Five-Hundred-Piece Puzzle Fortnight: a class keeps working on a 500-piece puzzle for two weeks, even when it gets boring.
How to use these motivation reading passages in Grade 2
- Guided reading groups, beginning with Nell at level K
- Literacy centers, with the answer key for checking
- Partner reading of A Sticker or a Proud Feeling?, then a talk about which reward helps them most
- A quiet read-alone corner for Three Ways to Get Going
Grade fit
The set rises from level K to level M, so the short narrative and first-person passages come first. The jobs are second-grade jobs: tidying books, feeding a fish, watering a droopy class plant, reading after a tiring gymnastics class. Each of these reading passages with questions ends with a plainly stated lesson that young readers can find and talk about.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
