About this resource

Some limits are spoken. Many are only felt. These respecting boundaries reading comprehension passages give Grade 3 readers ten texts at F&P levels N–P that cover physical, emotional and digital boundaries, with a cultural lens near the end. Aimed at Relationship Skills, one of the five CASEL competencies, the passages give third graders words for “stop” and for stepping back.

What students practice

  • Saying “stop” clearly and kindly
  • Noticing body language that shows someone is uncomfortable
  • Seeing how clear limits make friendships stronger
  • Respecting boundaries in a group chat or game
  • Pausing, apologizing and changing course after crossing a line

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels N–P, from how-to guides to science pieces and real-world features
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key for the boundaries multiple-choice questions on one page
  • 35 pages, with an overview of the passages, levels and SEL focus

A look inside

  • Why Cacti Have Spines: a protective instinct is linked to the need for personal space.
  • Meet Haben Girma: a deafblind lawyer uses communication tools to set boundaries and advocate for access.
  • How to Notice When Someone Feels Uncomfortable: body language, tone and eye contact tell the story.
  • How to Respect Boundaries Online: permission, privacy and backing off when asked, in a group chat or gaming session.
  • How Different Cultures Show Boundaries: politeness, personal space and touch vary around the world.

How to use these respecting boundaries reading passages

  • Guided reading groups at levels N–P, using the text types (how-to, science, biography) as a reading focus
  • Partner reading, then trade answers to the open-ended questions
  • SEL reading comprehension: read How to Respect Boundaries Online and talk about asking permission and backing off when asked
  • Independent practice or homework, checked with the one-page answer key
