About this resource

Young children aren’t selfish; they’re still discovering that other people have an inner life as real as their own. This walking in someone else’s shoes kit makes that idea visible with a simple paper shoe, so students in Grades 1–3 can step outside themselves and look back in. It builds the empathy at the center of Social Awareness, in SEL activities that use concrete, familiar scenarios.

What students practice

  • Imagining how someone else feels
  • Letting another view change how they act
  • Naming feelings with a feeling word
  • Suggesting how to help a classmate

What’s inside

  • A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: four steps, about 30 minutes
  • Shoe Cutouts: two shoes per page, one for a name and one for a feeling word, in 2 versions
  • Perspective Scenario Cards: 12 situations with how-might-they-feel and how-could-you-help questions, in color and black-and-white
  • Reflection Writing Page (three questions) and Sharing and Discussion Prompts (five questions, 2 versions); 21 pages

A look inside

  • From the teacher script: “Okay, now let’s switch. Put yourself in your friend’s shoes.”
  • Scenario Card: “A new student at school is sitting alone at lunch and looks shy.”
  • Scenario Card: “Your friend forgot their lines during a class play and looks embarrassed.”

How to use this walking in someone else’s shoes kit

  • Introduce the phrase and ask what it means, using the example of one friend excited about a new game while another feels nervous
  • Give students shoe cutouts to write a name on one and a feeling word on the other
  • Run the recess scenario: you want tag, your friend wants soccer; students say how they would feel, then switch sides
  • Reflect on whether seeing it from the other side changed anything, and close with a sharing circle

Grade fit

Concrete scenarios and short written reflections are made for Grades 1–3. The 12 scenario cards let you run the same steps with new situations.
