About this resource
Stress doesn’t always announce itself. In this muscle relaxation kit, let’s relax becomes a routine for Grades 1–4: students learn to catch tension where it shows up first, in tight shoulders, a knotted stomach or a jaw that won’t unclench. It builds a calming routine they can use on their own, a Self-Management skill in SEL time.
What students practice
- Noticing where stress shows up in the body
- Squeezing and releasing muscle groups
- Using slow breathing to calm down
- Putting a worry in a worry box
- Comparing how they feel before and after
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: four steps, about 30 minutes
- A Muscle Relaxation Guide, a one-page visual of the six-step toes-to-face sequence
- My Worry Box: a decorate-your-own box with four simple steps, plus a box template
- A seven-day Relaxation Routine Tracker (2 versions) and a five-step Calm Breathing Guide
- A Reflection Worksheet with before-and-after feelings and two short writing prompts; 16 pages in all
A look inside
- From the teacher script: “Now your arms and hands. Make fists like you’re squeezing lemons for lemonade.”
- Calm Breathing Guide: “Notice how your breathing helps your body relax and feel calm.”
- Reflection Worksheet: “What part of the relaxation exercise helped the most?”
How to use this muscle relaxation calming kit
- Start with a short talk about stress and where it shows up in the body
- Move through the toes-to-face sequence together, squeezing, holding and letting go
- Students write or draw a worry, fold it and place it in the Worry Box
- Use it as a morning calm-down, a transition after recess or PE, or part of a wellness unit
Grade fit
The playful script, drawing and circle-one reflection suit Grades 1–4 across the elementary years. Among SEL activities for self-regulation, it gives students a physical way to practice coping skills activities in class.
Pairs well with
Younger students can start with Balloon Breathing, and Pause and Think adds a stop-and-think routine.
Questions teachers ask
How long does the main lesson take?

What is the Worry Box?
Students write or draw a worry, fold it up and place it in a box they decorate themselves, a small way of saying they don’t need to carry it right now.
