About this resource

These communication skills role play scenarios put Grades 2–5 students in the role of the Active Listener, in twenty scripted conversations with friends, family, neighbors, coaches and teachers. One clarifying question saves Salome a wrong grab at the farmers market; one I-statement gets Vesna clicking the caps back on Rivka’s glue sticks. It’s SEL practice in Relationship Skills: listening, speaking clearly and reading tone.

What students practice

  • Listening with full attention
  • Speaking clearly
  • Using I-statements
  • Reading tone and body language
  • Asking clarifying questions

What’s inside

20scripted scenes, from a science discussion in class to a river path downtown
100discussion cards, five per scene, such as “Start With Who” and “Ask Before You Grab”
  • A detailed teacher script plus an outline
  • Objectives, a materials list and tips; 50 pages

A look inside

The Message for the Office: Seamus garbles his teacher’s message, then tries again: “I’ll start with who it’s from, then where we’ll be, then what she needs.”
The Green Ones: Salome asks, “Dad, do you mean the green apples, the green grapes or the green beans?”

The Stepping Stones, The Neighbor’s Tone and Coach’s Instructions are among the other scenes.

How to use these communication skills role play scenarios

Open with the 5–7 minute talk“Think of a time you tried to tell someone something important, but they weren’t really listening. What happened?”
Act out a scene (10–15 minutes), with students as the Active Listener and the other speakers
Redo the scene with the character using an I-statement or a clarifying question earlier, and compare
Keep the optional feelings-and-tone word list handy for I-statements, then share for 5–10 minutes

Grade fit

The PDF itself is titled Communication & Active Listening, and several scenes turn on listening: talking over a sister at dinner, drawing while Grandpa tells a story. The conversations are short and familiar, and students can read the role play scripts or improvise, which suits Grades 2–5.
