About this resource

After a rushed week, a magnifying glass sees a crumb as a boulder. These stress and mental health reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 readers ten passages at F&P levels Q–S on what stress is, how it touches mood, thinking and friendships, and when it has grown too large to carry without a trusted grown-up. The Self-Management set moves through ten different text types.

What students practice

  • Telling busy apart from stressed
  • Tracking how full each day feels to find patterns
  • Sorting helpful, tough and too-much stress
  • Noticing how stress affects sleep and friendships
  • Lowering stress as a group
  • Knowing when to bring in a trusted grown-up

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, from a first-person reflection to a fable-inspired story
  • 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions after each passage
  • A takeaway that closes every passage
  • Multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Month I Stopped Playing at Recess: a harder reading group and swim nights keep Laszlo out of kickball, while Orla keeps inviting him back and his teacher helps him find the cause.
  • The Yearbook Club’s Deadline Crunch: with eight days left and half the yearbook blank, Madhu suggests working in pairs and asks the advisor for an extra week.
  • A Train Station Announcer on Rush-Hour Pressure: Mr. Mendoza’s crew takes turns and talks after busy evenings.
  • How to Keep a One-Week Stress Log: students log how full each day feels, how strong the stress is and what helped, then look for patterns.

How to use these stress and mental health reading passages in Grade 4

  • Small reading groups at levels Q–S
  • Health classes: “How Sleep and Stress Affect Each Other” explains how short sleep and stress feed each other
  • SEL blocks: “Good Stress, Tough Stress, Too-Much Stress” sorts stress into three levels and shows how to help a friend
  • Checking the multiple-choice answers with the key

Grade fit

Levels run from Q to S, and the comparisons ask for real thinking: Two Kinds of Busy sets a week of chosen activities beside a week of tests and extra games. In these reading passages with questions, coping skills for stress mean noticing patterns early and asking for support.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The PDF notes that the written prompts never ask students to describe their own stress in detail; they point back to the text, to classmates, or to what a student might say to a grown-up. In Lior’s Brother Moves Away to Study, Lior grows tired and short-tempered over several weeks before he talks with Mom.

Pairs well with

Pair it with Stress and Mental Health Scenario Cards to apply the ideas to new situations.
