About this resource

A four-week weather unit can be done a piece at a time or crammed into the final night. These time management reading comprehension passages give Grade 5 readers ten passages at F&P levels S–V on planning ahead, keeping things where they can be found and protecting focused work time. This SEL reading comprehension set builds Self-Management with characters who run a yard sale, map a crowded week and schedule a district’s buses.

What students practice

  • Breaking a long project into a dated timeline
  • Planning the week ahead
  • Choosing an organizing system that fits
  • Managing interruptions during homework
  • Estimating how long tasks take
  • Mapping a busy week of clubs, chores and deadlines

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V, each in its own text type, from a school news feature to a fable-inspired story told by a wall timeline
  • 5 multiple-choice and 2 open-ended questions per passage
  • A short takeaway after each passage
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • Lindiwe Keeps the Yard Sale on Schedule: Lindiwe builds a shared schedule for her apartment building’s yard sale, checks in on four helpers and speeds up the pricing when it falls behind.
  • The Do-Not-Disturb Sign: Nobuhle makes a sign, promises her little brother play time at 4:30 and records how her work time changes.
  • Why Time Flies and Why It Drags: why time seems to race when we are absorbed and crawl when we wait, and how timing real tasks helps.
  • A Day With the Bus Dispatcher: Mr. Osei explains how schedules, spare buses and drivers, and organized records keep thousands of students on time.

How to use these time management reading passages in Grade 5

  • Small groups at levels S–V
  • Advisory lessons built around “Finding an Organization System That Fits,” which explains how to test a system for two weeks
  • Alongside a class planning routine, with “How to Plan Your Week on Sunday” as the model
  • Independent practice, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

Levels run from S to V, and the problems are fifth-grade sized: a six-week river booklet, art club and karate in the same week as a book club deadline, a library line that a class times and redesigns. The nonfiction stays practical, including a piece on why no single organizing system suits everyone. These reading passages with questions give older readers real planning decisions to weigh.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
