About this resource
A village adds planks to a river footbridge every spring and autumn for twenty years. These goal setting reading comprehension passages ask Grade 5 students to think about goals that stretch across months, seasons and even years. Ten readings at F&P levels S–V show how a goal takes shape and how small, repeated actions turn into routines that last. Use them as SEL reading comprehension in your Self-Management teaching.

A look inside
- The Bridge Built One Plank a Season: the builders change over twenty years, but the shared goal keeps going until people can cross.
- Building a Help Team for a Big Goal: Lerato matches three obstacles with three helpers to raise her science grade.
- Ms. Nkemelu’s Three-Year Tree Plan: a goal to plant forty trees along the town’s creek, tracked tree by tree on a map.
- Nerissa’s Long-Term Model Railway Plan: when two milestones slip, Nerissa simplifies her design to keep what matters most.
How to use these goal setting reading passages in Grade 5
- Small-group instruction moving from level S to level V
- Independent practice, checked with the answer key
- Literacy centers, with Streaks vs. Totals: Two Ways to Track as a compare-and-contrast station
- A launch for setting class goals, after reading The Shade Sail Fundraiser Hits Its Milestones
Grade fit
At levels S to V, these readings suit fifth graders ready for longer nonfiction. The science passage explains how a deep brain area takes over repeated actions and why old habits are easier to replace than erase, and Ngaio’s first-person piece looks back at a finished comic book before she picks a shorter next goal. The long time frames make these reading passages with questions a good fit for older students.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Extend the unit with Goal Setting What Would You Do? Cards or Goal Setting Role Play Scenarios.
Questions teachers ask
Is there an answer key?
Yes, for the multiple-choice items. It is on the last page of the PDF.
Could I use this to start class goal setting?
Yes. The PDF suggests the set as a natural launch for setting class goals, and the shade sail news feature shows a fifth grade working toward a shared target with monthly milestones.
