About this resource

Moss ties one shoe each morning while Dad ties the other, until the day the bow holds. These goal setting reading comprehension passages show Grade 2 readers how to pick one clear goal, take tiny steps toward it and build daily habits they can see and count. The ten passages sit at F&P levels K–M and fit right into a Self-Management unit or your reading block as SEL reading comprehension.

What students practice

  • Picking one clear goal
  • Taking one small step at a time
  • Building a small daily habit
  • Tracking progress on a chart
  • Working toward a class goal together

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, mixing a fable, a first-person piece, a student profile, a how-to guide, a news article and more
  • A takeaway closing each passage
  • 5 multiple-choice questions after every passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage
  • A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 34 pages

A look inside

  • Mo the Mole Digs a Tunnel: the dirt is too much to move at once, so Mo digs one small scoop at a time until he reaches his cousin.
  • How Pikas Get Ready for Winter: small mountain animals gather grasses and flowers into hay piles all summer so they have food until spring.
  • A Wish or a Plan?: Luz and Nkiru both want to do a cartwheel, but only Nkiru starts with a plan, and by August she can do a wobbly cartwheel.
  • One Hundred Books on a Caterpillar: a class tracks its reading on a paper caterpillar and changes its plan when progress slows.

How to use these goal setting reading passages in Grade 2

  • Small reading groups, starting with Moss at level K
  • Morning meeting: read Lyle’s Bedtime Book Habit aloud and ask what tiny habit students could start
  • Goal-setting lessons at the start of a term, with How to Make a Star Chart as a model for tracking
  • Independent practice checked with the answer key

Grade fit

Passages climb from level K to level M, so early readers start with short first-person and narrative texts before the informational pieces. The goals are sized for seven- and eight-year-olds: tying shoes, a cartwheel, growing tomatoes in a pot. Too Many Goals at Once gives them permission to choose just one, and each of these reading passages with questions ends on a plainly stated lesson.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The answers to the multiple-choice questions are on the last page of the PDF.

Do the passages cover habits as well as goals?

Yes. Several focus on small daily habits, such as reading one page at bedtime or watering tomatoes each morning, with a watering can by the back door as the reminder.
