About this resource

Forgetting your lines in front of the whole class is a very public kind of setback. These resilience reading comprehension passages for Grade 4 follow students through moments like that, across ten texts at F&P levels Q–S: a missed karate belt, a model that falls apart the night before it’s due, a mural half washed away by rain. It’s Self-Management for the age of bigger projects and live audiences.

What students practice

  • Trying again after falling short
  • Returning after a public setback
  • Recovering when a partner lets you down
  • Pushing through the messy middle of a long project
  • Telling perseverance and resilience apart

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, including a fable about a hermit crab and a science passage on rest days
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage: the first rooted in the text, the second in the student’s own experience
  • MCQ answer key on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • When I Forgot My Lines at the Puppet Show: Iker freezes, wants to quit, and goes back to rehearsals until the next show.
  • The Model That Collapsed the Night Before: after a few tears, Hal rebuilds a smaller windmill in time, with a note about the first one.
  • My Mistake or Someone Else’s? Bouncing Back: recovering from your own slip versus a partner who forgets the poster.
  • How to Push Through the Messy Middle: remember why you started, notice small wins and lean on people who support you.
  • Perseverance and Resilience: Partners, Not Twins: keeping going during something hard versus bouncing back after it.

How to use these resilience reading passages in Grade 4

  • Small-group lessons at levels Q–S
  • Morning work, checked with the answer key
  • Class discussion, using the second open-ended prompt to connect a passage to students’ own setbacks
  • Calm partner reading on the rug, such as “Koro the Hermit Crab Needs a New Shell”

Grade fit

Levels span Q to S, and the situations match what fourth graders take on: belt tests, puppet shows, group projects, a skating season after a summer away. The set also gives them language to tell two related skills apart, and “Why Rest Days Help Athletes Bounce Back” shows that rest is part of keeping going. These reading passages with questions work as SEL reading comprehension without leaving the reading block.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
